The Library l The World ~ Assignment 4

It seems that this assignment is going to do something "real" now, it is time to say good bye to the "abstract". But still, we do it in the special (straight) way. This project is to create the expansion of the library building to double the original area and simultaneously create an(other) library that should be seem through a "prescribed lens," which is the Library as Island. (Each one got different topics like power, chance, mind, shadow etc.) For the word "Island", the first thing that I can think of is isolation and something that is along, independent and outstanding. Also, I check up this word in dictionary: "Island - 1. a tract of land or an isolated hill completely surrounded by water, 2. a clump of woodland in a prairie, 3. Anatomy. an isolated portion of tissue differing in structure from the surrounding tissue/A cluster of cells differing in structure or function from the cells constituting the surrounding tissue. From the definitions above, it can be developed into 3 different slims (mixed with my concepts in assignment 3).

During the process, I choose to use the definition 1 to develop my concept models since it is more define about what "Island" is and more common for what people feel about "Island." Generally, in order to create the feeling of isolation, I design to make the main piece (which is hugh) of the library that would be floating and isolated from the ground. The big flat floating piece (that included main program like book stacks and reading areas) might actually look like a piece of land (the blue part in the left photo) and provide a big open space on the top for the outdoor reading at the same time (which means that people can walk on the land). Also, the supporting parts (the pink parts in the left photo) contain secondary spaces such as lecture hall, administration, storage etc.; they act as the "hills" of the "land" and create the hierarchy to make the entire form feel more like an island.

Futhermore, I believe the building (that would be too high) would be best place at the back side of the original library in the paring lot as its large size and the possibility for the physical connections to the original library, people circulation and track loading. At the same time, it provides shade for the parking area (which I hope people would appreciate) since the building is floating and it harmony with the surrounding buildings there instead putting it in the grass field and ruin the harmonious environment. For more detail, the building could link back to the mapping; you would see that the site sections could serves as the building sections and the open void would be the circulation spaces (It could be imagined as a worm path with many holes that is inside the box; the path idea could also be found in my previous projects...it seemed that I kept digging holes (and let myself to jump in) in this semester.) In addtion, as a reference, part of the building or section sharps and circulation paths might connected to the OMA projects (the building is taking the top part only and more like an up side down version.)

Species of Spaces & Other Pieces ~ 10/2 Reading

It talks about the general layout of library such as where the books should place...and so on.
